Vice President’s Report, February 18, 2014
As Bob noted last month, he is away enjoying himself in
Cuba. He has promised to return in time
for the AGM in March.
On the subject of the AGM, we have forms here at the front
desk for nominations to the committee.
It is always good to get new blood even if the old blood still works
well, as it does. Committee work for
Probus is by no means onerous; we meet once a month in the cafe downstairs for
about an hour, and committee work is always a means to get to know your fellow
Probians better. So this is my sales
pitch: Give it a go.
Later in today’s meeting, Dr. Tom Crow will speak on Stroke
Recovery. It is a topic close to the
hearts (no pun intended) of many of us and I am sure he will have an attentive
audience.
Copies of our Newsletter are circulated at out meetings,
but an e-mail edition will also be sent to those on our e-mail list. For those not on e-mail, Ian will arrange to
send the Newsletter by post to those who are not at the meeting. I have a list
of members who are on e-mail. I would be
pleased if members would look at the list to ensure they are there and that
their address is correct.
The Probus Reform Group:
The matter before the NSW Civil & Administrative
Tribunal was withdrawn and the two parties had a four-hour
conference afterwards. It seems there is
good reason to hope that an agreed reform programme will be met.

Membership report:
We will be
inducting one new member this meeting, Jill C from Willoughby. This will bring our members to 61, (36 women
and 25 men).
PROGRAM OF
ACTIVITIES
MONTHLY MEETINGS: Today we welcome Dr. Tom Crow, who will bring us up to date on all
matters concerned with Stroke Recovery, and in April our speaker is poet and
actor Colin Taylor.
PROBUS WALKERS:
Tuesday 11th March 2014. Fairlight to Shelley Beach or North
Steyne. This will be a pleasant easy
walk to begin our year. We will assemble
at St. Leonards Station to catch the Manly bus.
Alighting at Fairlight we can partake of coffee (if desired) at a nearby
cafe then proceed through a couple of streets to Fairlight for the start of the
coastal walkway. Great views through the
Heads can be seen and the occasional aerial glider. On reaching Manly we will continue to either
Shelley Beach or North Steyne and return to a hotel in the Corso for lunch.
Walk approx. 3.5 klms. MEET: At 9:25am outside St. Leonards Station
(Pacific Highway) to catch bus 143 at 9:35am.
OUTINGS:
Tuesday 25th February: A scenic drive to Katoomba,
where we will visit the Three Sisters at Echo Point, before visiting the Blue
Mountains Chocolate Company where we will have a demonstration in their
factory. Chocoholics will be able to
taste and purchase the company’s chocolates.
The weather should be cooler than in Sydney! We hope our visit will assist in the recovery
of business in a small way, after the devastating bush fires. Lunch will be at
the Katoomba RSL. Bus leaves at
9:00am. Cost: $30.
Tuesday 25th March: Names and money taken for a
visit to the Baha’i Temple at Terry Hills, where we will have a guided tour,
view exhibits and learn more about the history and teachings of the Baha’i
faith. There will be time to browse the bookshop as well as the native garden
which contains a large variety of plants.
Lunch at Pittwater RSL before a scenic drive back home along the
coast. Bus leaves at 9:30am. Cost:
$30.
Many happy returns of the day for your February Birthday: Joan H 4th, Gwen Mac 21st
