From the President: Gillian and I look forward to seeing you all again this Tuesday. We’ve had a wonderful holiday with our son and family in England. However, as always, it’s good to be home in Sydney and to put the suitcases away.
This month we have a very interesting Speaker, and much credit to Douglas who seems to have an endless list of stimulating Speakers on a wide variety of subjects. For this month’s outing, Evelyn has arranged a visit to Kids Research, and I’ll leave them both to give us more details at the meeting.
We have apologies for the meeting from Jeanette, and my appreciation to Evelyn for volunteering to take over the secretarial duties today. We also have apologies from Treasurer Paul, who has asked me to announce this month’s meeting is another “free morning tea day as a result of a continuing healthy balance in the kitty.”
Membership Report: Membership now stands at 55 (33 Ladies, 22 Men).
Many Happy Returns of the Day for your October Birthday: Terry N 06, Peter M 08, George B 10, Eleanor S 26, and Joan B 29.
Note: All our Probus meetings are generally held on the third Tuesday of every month at 10:15am. The next meeting will be held on the 20th of November 2018. The committee meetings are conducted in the Northbridge Golf Club at 9:00am on the same day as the meeting. Members are welcome to attend.
Program of Activities
Guest Speakers: Today Olya Roohizadegan will tell us about her escape from Iran, and next month Harvey Broadbent’s topic is “Weird and Not So Wonderful Histories”.
Probus Walkers: Tuesday 13th November.
Bronte to Bondi Beach.
This walk is an annual event for our walkers which is very enjoyable. Although the Sculptures-by-the-Sea exhibits will be over, the upside is there will be fewer people along the pathway. The path has a gradient classed as medium with many steps. Lunch/refreshments will be at The Icebergs Club (photo ID required).
MEET: At Liverpool Street bus stop (just around the corner from the Museum Station, Elizabeth St.), at 9:30am to catch the next 333 bus to Bondi Junction where we change and catch the 379 bus to Bronte.
Probus Outings: Tuesday 23rd October.
Westmead Kids Research Centre.
Kids research has approximately 600 researchers and support staff, a passionate team of world class researchers dedicated to improving the lives of children with many illnesses including cancer, bone diseases, genetic conditions, diabetes, obesity, infectious diseases, brain and muscle disorders, sleep disorders, kidney and liver diseases. The tour is booked for 10:30am; we will be walking through the labs, so closed-in shoes must be worn. Bus is $30, and will depart at 9:00am. Lunch TBA.
Tuesday November 27th:
Cruise on the Hawksbury. The Riverboat Postman Run.
We have done this fairly recently, but it will give us a lovely day on the water (it rained the last time we went!). Morning tea and lunch provided for $45.00. Drink purchases are extra. We will go to Brooklyn by train. Details in the next bulletin.
Tuesday December 11th: Christmas Luncheon at Northbridge Golf Club.
Fifth Tuesday Luncheon, 30th October: At the Tanpopo, a Japanese restaurant located at 81 Military Road in Neutral Bay, directly opposite the Oaks Hotel. 9908 4280.
