 Newsletter 353                                18 January 2022

President’s report:  I hope you have all had a very pleasant Christmas season and that 2022 eventually delivers us all we need for peaceful, contented lives.

Thank you everybody who contributed to our Christmas function, including our MC

Gary, poetry reader Clive, singer Ivan, photo competition organisers Peter and Noreen, chief organiser Robin, chocolate supplier Peggy, lucky door prize organiser Oriel, Christmas quizzer Ian, and of course, all the members who attended.  I could see that Doreen loved the club presentation, particularly the poetry reading, to thank her for all she has done for us over the years.

This is our first meeting since many of us enjoyed James Bond at the Hayden Orpheum.  We also got to see “Come from Away”.  Third time lucky.  Thank you Peggy for organising those events.  We look forward to more 5th Tuesdays and possible concerts in 2022.

And so COVID is once again wreaking havoc.  Our meeting plans have been thrown into disarray, not only because we had positive RATs, but because so many of us are in the vulnerable group.  The speaker we had invited to this month’s meeting, Julian Todd talking about the anniversary of the Overland Telegraph Line, has been postponed to February.  Julian is somebody you need to listen to in person.  So do your friends a favour and  invite them to come to the February meeting to hear an amazing story.  Invite any prospective members as well.

This month we are meeting with the assistance of our good friend ZOOM.  We ask that all members prepare a very short introduction to something they enjoy doing— whether it be gardening, stamp collecting, photography, cooking, dancing, just to name a few possible topics.  You can use photos if you like, or show us items that support your talk, or indeed just talk without using any props.  But please, to make it as enjoyable as possible we need members to be involved.  Will I talk about bushcare?  Community gardening perhaps?  Maybe bushwalking?  Let Douglas know that you will be involved and your topic so that he can organise a program: dirvin33@gmail.com, with the subject “I love to . . .”.

Membership report:  Our membership stands at 52 (34 women and 18 men).

Many Happy Returns of the Day for your December and January birthdays:  In December, Richard L 09, Willemina K 21, and Peter W21.

  In January, Shelagh K 05, Barrie G 11, Judy McD 12, Judy I 21 and Susan M 31.

Probus Walkers / Non-Walkers:  Tuesday 8th February 2022.  Due to the current COVID situation our annual lunch at The Little Snail will not take place  Maybe if things improve we will be able to go later in the year.

Events: None are scheduled at the moment, everything is dependent upon COVID improving enough for it to be a viable plan to go to the movies late March.  If we can make such a plan, it will be noted in the February newsletter.

Probus Outings:  Unfortunately, we have had to change out proposed ‘sausage sizzle’ outing on the 25th January at Pearl Beach, but we are hoping we can hold it on 22nd February.  Looking forward to sitting by the seaside with you!

Guest Speakers:  The speaker for February has been changed to Julian Todd, who will talk about the Overland Telegraph Line.
March AGM:  Richard Law/Rosemary Langton
April:  Jennifer Philips, “Fighting Cancer”
May:  Jenny Horsefield, “Canberra War Time Bookshop”.
June:  Ian Westmorland, “Mentoring Men”.
