*PROBUS CLUB NORTH SYDNEY  president’s report

August started with our outing to Nan Tien temple in Wollongong. We were joined by friends and  members from other Probus clubs from our cluster. It was a wonderful day - amazing temples, an  informative guide, a delicious vegetarian lunch, a t’ai chi class, and great company made for a  very special day. For me the t’ai chi was a highlight, and has motivated me to join a small group to  keep it up. Thank you Robin for organising the outing.

Sadly we will not be able to hold our meeting this month. We were informed at very short notice  that building work on Northbridge Golf Club would prevent us using our usual room, and the  noise and dust of construction would make a meeting in the bar area difficult. It is a pity that there  was too little time to organise an alternative venue. I am in touch with the club manager who will  give ample warning if the work is likely to be ongoing, so the we can organise an alternative  venue if necessary next month.

The committee will meet on Tuesday to discuss planning for the Probus 50th celebration, and  plan for our usual schedule of activities.

I just wanted to remind you that going forward, your orders for lunch after our meetings at  Northbridge GC will need to be sent to me by 8am on the Monday before every meeting, as the  caterers had difficulty managing multiple email requests. Hopefully this new approach will be  successful.

I hope to see you all at our September meeting.

speakers

This month's speaker was to be Steve Liebmann, for 20 years the host of Channel 9"s  Today show. Because the General meeting has been cancelled, Steve has kindly agreed to  speak at our February 2027 meeting.

Steve is best known for co-hosting Today on the Nine Network between 1982 and 1986,  and again from 1990 to 2005. He will talk about his life as a long-time journalist in a  presentation entitled 'Ramblings of an Aged Journo'.

august outing report

NAN TIEN TEMPLE AND SEACLIFF BRIDGE

We were joined by Cremorne, Waverton, Crows Nest & St George Probus clubs making  36 travellers in all for our outing to the Nan Tien Temple in Wollongong. Morning tea was  had in very chilly windy weather at Sublime Point lookout overlooking the "sublime" views  of Wollongong.

At the Temple we were given a talk on Buddhism and its meanings. We enjoyed a  vegetarian lunch and had a lesson in Tai Chi given by one of the monks.

We returned home via the Seacliff bridge and were entertained by our driver who as his  second job takes groups out to snorkel with the sharks. He informed us this year whales  are returning to the south earlier due to the warmer waters off our coast. We arrived  home a little later than expected, tired and happy.

august walk report

We had the perfect winter's day for a walk, to enjoy the Botanic Gardens and a sparkling  Sydney harbour. We had a great turnout of 17 people, plus one person joining the group  at CityExtra.

However, there were a couple of hitches. Firstly The Calyx was closed for a private event. I  hadn't thought to check this, as I have never found it closed before. I apologise for the  oversight, but at least we were able to get coffee by the ponds.

Secondly, Mary had to pull out after coffee and coerced Lindsay to take over, which he did  gracefully - thank you, Lindsay.

I understand that after that, it all went smoothly and an enjoyable walk and lunch  followed.
