 Newsletter 364                                                            17 January 2023

President’s report:  A very warm welcome to all members and guests to the Probus Club of North Sydney.

I hope you have all had a very pleasant Christmas season and that 2023 provides all that you and your families need for peaceful, contented lives.  We can look forward to another very full and active Probus calendar in the year ahead.

Thank you to all the members and guests who helped to make our Christmas lunch such a wonderful event.

It was a shame that several members were unable to attend because of health issues.  Special thanks go to Robin, who was the driving force and organised the lucky door prizes and chocolate gifts; Susan and her helpers for the entertaining slide show and photography; our bevy of ladies who set the tables, Oriel for her chocolate prizes, Ian for the quiz; Douglas for the limerick; and Ivan for leading the final Christmas carol.  We have some incredible talent in the club.  It was good of Santa And his singing helper to find the time to come and hand out the lucky door prizes.

Our traditional “Kent Memorial Walk” was well patronised, with some members joining the walkers for lunch.  Thank you Oriel.  There was also a lot of interest in the outing to Old Government House in Parramatta organised by Noreen and Peter in November.

November 2022 seems so long ago when we enjoyed our 5th Tuesday movie, the satirical “The Glass Onion” sending up a certain Twitter mogul.  Peggy also organised a smorgasbord of movies over the Christmas break.  These ranged from “La Traviata”, performed by the Met Opera, through to Avatar with the Lost King, The Banshees of Inisherin, Triangle of Sadness and A Man Called Otto in between.  There was something for everybody.

The North Sydney Rotary Club is our sponsoring club.  Douglas and I attended their weekly meeting last week, which was very interesting.  They would like to have a closer relationship with our club and I think it would be good for our club to become involved and support them in some of their activities.

The 40th Anniversary celebration plans are evolving.  We will be holding a special luncheon on 18th April 2023, which will be a normal meeting day.  Please mark the date in your calendar.  We would like to have more than 50 members and guests attending.  This luncheon will be subsidised by the club as was the Christmas lunch.  The colour ruby is for the 40th anniversary.  So look out for all things ruby to celebrate that day.  The anniversary booklet is having a make-over and should be ready for delivery at the lunch.

We always need new members to maintain the vitality of our club.  So please invite those of your friends and acquaintances who may be interested in joining to come along to a meeting.  Guests are also very welcome to attend any of our activities.

Membership report:  Our membership stands at 56 (36 women and 20 men).

Many happy returns for your January birthday: Shelagh K 05, Barrie G 11, Judy McD 12, and Susan M 31.

Note:  All our Probus meetings are generally held on the third Tuesday of every month at 10:15am.  The next meeting will be held on the 21st of February 2023.  The committee meetings are conducted in the Northbridge Golf Club at 9:00am on the same day as the meeting.  Members are encouraged to attend.

Please put in your diary we are planning to see the latest Cate Blanchett film, “Tar”, at the Orpheum.  This film is set in the world of Western classical music and centers on Lydia Tar, widely considered one of the greatest living composer-conductors and first-ever female music director of a major German orchestra.  This film is said to be Cate Blanchett’s best performance.

Details of when to meet will be emailed to you when the starting time of the film is known.  We are looking forward to our first movie for 2023.

Probus Outing: Sausage Sizzle at Pearl Beach Tuesday 24th January.

Another try for a day at the Beach and please bring the sunshine!  The address is 42 Coral Crescent towards the northern end of Pearl Beach.  Time from 10am.  If you cannot drive yourself or share with other members, please email Noreen at noreenbyrne24@gmail.com or ring 0412 957 857, and we can work out alternative arrangements for you.  If you wish to arrive by train Peter could pick you up at Woy Woy.

Please ring Noreen when you arrive for the easy way in, if you wish to avoid the front steps.  You may like to have a swim in the pool or in the ocean, so bring your bathers, hats or inflatable swans, whatever you need for a day at the beach.  There is a prize for the greatest number of laps swum in the pool.  On the other hand, there are shady walks around the area.

There is a donation of $15 towards the cost of tea, coffee and biscuits as well as sausages and salads for lunch.  We would like an indication if you are coming this Tuesday at the meeting, and if you decide later on then please email a couple of days beforehand, to assist with catering.
