THE PROBUS CLUB OF NORTH SYDNEY                          Newsletter 392 15 July, 2025

PRESIDENT’S REPORT - Barbara B

Another month has flown by. On 2nd July,  Carol-Anne, Bill and I attended a Probus  Information Day at Willoughby Community  Centre. It was a great opportunity to meet  with over 90 other delegates from Probus  clubs from all over Sydney. Presentations  by PSP focused on the challenges of  recruiting new members, and ensuring the  continuation of clubs. There was lively  discussion on how best to attract new  members, with a focus on co-operation  between clubs who are in the same  clusters.

Then on Saturday 5th July, a wonderful  band of volunteers joined Lyn and me at  the North Sydney Produce Market in a  recruitment drive. Huge thanks to Lyn, who  was responsible for organising the day,  and to Oriel, Pru, Deon, Bill, Noreen and  Peter who gave up their Saturday morning  to help. There were a number of people  interested in finding out more about  Probus, and who left their details with us.  Lyn will be sending each of them a follow  up email and copy of our newsletter.  Hopefully we will be welcoming some new  members in the near future.

Keep warm and well as we shiver through  one of our colder winters for several years.

WELFARE - Jackie M

A card was sent to Geoff P, who had a  fall.

BIRTHDAYS in July

12 Oriel T,16 Carol-Anne B, 18  Denise B, 27 Peter B

SPEAKERS - Patrick W

The speaker this month is Dr Barbara  Briggs AM and her subject is ‘Behind the  Scenes at Sydney’s Botanical Gardens.’  Barbara worked in the gardens for many  for many years, and is a member of  Northbridge Probus Club.

The speaker in August will be Jenny  Cartwright and her subject is ‘Never Give  Up!’ This is an inspirational description  describing how she overcame some of her  personal challenges.

MEMBERSHIP - report from Lyn M Current membership is 55.

We had a very successful day at the North  Sydney Produce Market. Firstly, a big  thank you to my helpers. Barbara B, Pru  T, Oriel Tr, Deon C,  Noreen and Peter B, and Bill  B. We took down the names of 7  people who I will keep in touch with over

the coming weeks – and I hope that many  if not all of them decide to join.

The attached photo shows Bill, Barbara,  myself and Pru – rugged up against the  cold morning at the market.

MOVIES – Peter W

This month’s film is at The Orpheum on  Tuesday 22nd July at a time to be  communicated later when I have more  details. Because I can’t be sure at this  stage whether my first choice will still be  shown, I have a back-up in mind.

Hopefully we will be able to see Riviera  Revenge which is a French comedy about  a foul mouthed, Ill-tempered and  uncompromising retired military

commander who has to face up to the  realisation that his wife of 50 years  cheated on him 40 years ago. The result is  a very funny movie that was a hit during  the French film festival.

If this film is not still running then we’ll go  for The Story of Souleymane which again  is a French movie and is about a food  delivery cyclist and asylum seeker who  has 2 days to prepare his story for a make  or break interview to secure legal  residency.

August Outing – 29 July 2025

The August Outing will be the Christmas in  July lunch at Bygone Beauties at Leura,

organized by Robin S. This outing  is now booked out.

WALKS - report from Lindsay K

9 of us turned up for the walk, Barbara B,  Peter W, Jocelyn M, Joan, Bill & Dion C,  Bill B, Penny W, and myself. It was a cold  overcast day. We caught the ferry to  Kissing Point, and we did a short walk  around Putney. We caught another ferry to  Cabarita Point where we walked to  Breakfast Point and we had lunch at the  cafe there. Part of the path was closed  due to maintenance, so we had to follow a  detour around it. A good time was had by  all.

12th August Walk

The next walk we will start from

Wollstonecraft train station. We will have  coffee at the cafe near platform 2. From  there we will walk down to Smoothey Park,  take the stairs down to the creek. We will  follow Berrys Creek to Gore Cove. There  is a short track around Berry Island. Then  we walk up Shirley road back to the train  station where we will have lunch at the  same cafe.

The walk is approximately 2.5 kilometres  and takes about 2 hours to complete. This  is a medium walk, board walk, stairs, and  (mostly) rough bush track. It is a very  pretty walk through bushland. There are  aboriginal carvings to be seen on the Berry  Island Walk.

I would suggest that we meet at the cafe at  10.30 for coffee. The cafe closes at

3pm. Penny and I will be away on the  Cook Island tour, so Bill Berry will be  leading this one.

The September walk will be in the eastern  suburbs.

Judy C will produce the August  newsletter. Please email copy to her on  judycrewe@me.com one week before the  date of the Probus meeting.
