THE PROBUS CLUB OF NORTH SYDNEY

                    Newsletter 393 19 August, 2025

PRESIDENT’S REPORT - Barbara l

At our last meeting we were delighted to

welcome three visitors attending Probus

for the first time. They first made contact

with us at the Probus stall at North Sydney

Markets in July. We hope they continue to

join us into the future. It is so important for

the club’s ongoing viability not only to

maintain our current membership but to

grow it.

We are very lucky to have a group of

willing members who organise outings,

walks, movie viewing, arrange speakers

for our meetings, and non-routine theatre

and musical outings. If you would be

happy to help, or if have any suggestions

for additional activities, and you are able to

assist in arranging them, the management

committee would love to hear from you.

Thank you to Robin for organising

Christmas in July in Leura. Twenty

members attended and were treated to a

fabulous meal amidst hundreds (possibly

thousands) of teapots- it was a great day!

“Bygone Beauties” in Leura , the setting for a very

convivial and enjoyable Christmas in July. Chilly

diners restored to warmth by Christmas fare,

gluhwein and good conversation. An excellent time

was had by all.

BIRTHDAYS

Oriel T, 12 July, Carol-anne B,  16 July, Denise B, 18 July, Peter  B 27 July.

MEMBERSHIP - Lyn M

There are currently 55 members. WELFARE - Jackie M

Remember to call Jackie (0412 836 997) if  you know of any members needing  welfare support.

SPEAKERS - Patrick W

This month’s speaker is Jenny  Cartwright, and her subject is Never  Give Up. Jenny started giving these  motivational talks following her

unsuccessful bilateral hip surgery 12  years ago. This surgery put an end to  her previously very active lifestyle, and  led to some unconventional treatments  aimed at ‘what she could still do rather  than what she couldn’t do’.

September’s speaker will be Jess  Mudditt and her subject is The joys of  writing and publishing your own book.  Jess achieved her ambition, and has  written and self published two books,  which led to her starting a publishing  company and a podcast.

MOVIES - report from Peter W

This month’s film is on Tuesday 26  August at the Cremorne Orpheum  Theatre at a time to be confirmed.

The film that I have selected is Mr Burton.  This is a true story of a working class boy  destined for greatness and the teacher  who first saw his potential.

It covers the life of Richard Jenkins, a  volatile yet gifted teen from a fractured  home who becomes better known as  Richard Burton.

NEXT OUTING - Bill B

A Guided Tour of the Chau Chak Wing  Museum of the University of Sydney, has  been arranged for 10:30 – 11:30am,  Tuesday 2 September 2025.

Officially opened in 2020, the Museum  houses what were formerly three separate  collections: the Nicholson Museum  (antiquities), the Macleay Museum (natural  history) and the Power art collection. See:  https://www.sydney.edu.au/museum/

There is a cafĂ© on site with an interesting  luncheon menu. The Museum building sits  at the University Avenue campus entrance,  off Parramatta Road. For details of how to  get there see:

https://www.sydney.edu.au/museum/about us/getting-here.html

✒︎ ✒︎ PLEASE NOTE: we need 6 more  people to keep the cost to $15.00 pp.  Please advise me ASAP that you will be

participating and pay into the Probus bank  account. ✒︎ ✒︎ ✒︎ ✒︎

A FUTURE OUTING - Jocelyn M An organised tour of the State Theatre is  proposed for the 7 October outing. Pricing will depend on how many people  wish to attend but will probably be in the  range of $17.00 to $23.50.

In order to make a booking we will need to  get some idea (at the meeting on 19  August) of how many people want to  participate. Please give this some thought.

FOR CONSIDERATION. FUTURE  TRAVEL AND OTHER

POSSIBILITIES?

Did everyone see Bill B’s recent emails  with full details on forthcoming organised  trips to the Blue Mountains (Alura  Coaches) and Japan (Janesco Travel), not  to mention a Probus golf day at Epping?  All of these could be worth investigating.
