Welcome all Members and Guests to the Probus Club of North Sydney.
Everyone, who went on the outing enjoyed the trip to Wollongong last month. The weather was good and at Stanwell Park we saw Hang Gliders taking off from the cliff top and landing in front of us on the beach. The Hang Glider operators jump off with an ‘adventurous’ participant in tandem and it takes 20 to 30 minutes to complete the jump. One of the operators told me he had jumped in tandem with a lady aged 91 years a couple of weeks ago so this is something we can all aspire to do!!!! We also travelled over the Sea Cliff Bridge and a large number of our group enjoyed our walk over the bridge.
Last month’s speaker, Wendy Miles, gave a very in depth talk on her father ( Sir Hudson Fysh) and the history of QANTAS which was accompanied with many black and white photographs.
Our first walk of the year to Lisgar Gardens at Hornsby was well attended (it may have had something to do with the knowledge we would be partaking of scones and tea at the CWA to begin with). The trees in the gardens are great and we also saw bush turkeys, kookaburras and yellow breasted robins.
Membership fee of $30.00 for the 2011 year is now due, please see the Treasurer.
We will be electing a new President and Committee for the 2011 at our AGM today. I wish the new Committee an interesting and successful year.

Who we are
Like all Probus Clubs, The Probus Club of North Sydney provides an opportunity for retired and semi-retired people to keep active mentally and physically as well as enjoying social interaction with fellow Probians. We are a club of some fifty men and women and welcome enquiries from those interested in joining us.
When and where we meet
We meet at 10 am on the third Tuesday of each month in the North Sydney Leagues Club, which provides plenty of free parking. Many of us choose to socialize after the meeting by having lunch together at the Club.
Outings - Come and join us
The club organizes an outing on the fourth Tuesday each month. These outings are planned as day activities and frequently we use the North Sydney Community bus. Occasionally a day train trip is arranged. Trips in recent times have included visits to the Queen's coach being built at Manly, the Powerhouse Museum reserve exhibits at Castle Hill, whale watching at Cape Solander and historic Camden.
Guest Speaker
At each monthly meeting we have a guest speaker. This is a popular part of club activities as speakers are chosen to speak on a variety of subjects and members usually find them interesting, entertaining and informative. One of our Committee members is responsible for organizing this activity and welcomes suggestions from members.
A brief history of our Club
The history of the Probus Club of North Sydney has an amusing beginning. Rotarian, Ted S, was commissioned by his club to establish a mens' Probus Club in the district. Ted thought this would be a simple pleasant task and placed an advertisement in local newspapers inviting interested men to contact him. He received a phone call from a woman introducing herself as Janet H-F querying why only men were invited to attend and announcing that she would like to come to the meeting. Ted could find no reason to deny her and the meeting duly took place with Janet in attendance. Apparently Janet was very persuasive and Ted accepted her arguments and could see no reason why both men and women could not belong to the same club. He resolved to take back to his Rotary club the recommendation that a mixed club be formed. His next job was to persuade his Rotarians to agree to the recommendation which they duly did. So, seven years after the first Probus club in Australia was formed at Hunters Hill the first mixed club came into existence at North Sydney. Our club celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2008 and was delighted to have both Ted and Janet as guests.
