NEWSLETTER No. 298                20 September 2016

President’s Report
Last week’s walk from Fairlight to Manly and Shelley Beach was enjoyable.  The coastal walkway provided us with great harbour views.  A lovely lunch was held at the Ivanhoe Hotel on the Corso at Manly.  The next walk will be from Circular Quay to Darling Harbour.

The August outing to Fairground Follies was an extremely successful day, with plans to do extra group visits this year for those who were unable to attend the outing.  The next outing is to the Locomotive Museum at Valley Heights.

The August luncheon at The Opera Dining in Crows Nest was ‘bellissima’.  We look forward to our next fifth Tuesday lunch.

Program of Activities

Guest Speakers:  Today we welcome John Xuereh, who will talk to us about “The Logistics of the Hajj”.  Next month, Terence Goldberg will present information on Wills, Power of Attorney, Enduring Guardianship and other legal matters we should understand.

Probus Walkers:  Tuesday 11 October.  Circular Quay to Barangaroo and Darling Harbour.
The walk will take us around The Rocks, Dawes Point, Barangaroo to Darling Harbour.  This is an easy walk with great Harbour views and the opportunity to see all the new development in the area.  Lunch at The Little Snail, located near the Pyrmont Bridge.
Meet at 9:30am near the entrance to Circular Quay Wharf number 5.

Probus Outings:  Tuesday 27th September:  A small change of plan has occurred.  We will go to the Valley Heights Locomotive Depot Heritage Museum.  We will have a Devonshire morning tea, a history talk and a guided tour.  This is an opening just for us, and the cost is $15 each on the basis of approximately 16 members attending.  Lunch will be at the Oriental Hotel in Springwood.  Depending on the time available after lunch, and discussion with the driver, we can then drive higher up the mountains, to, say, Leura.  Departure is at 9am.

Tuesday 25th October: NOTE THIS OUTING HAS BEEN POSTPONED TO ANOTHER MONTH DUE TO OUR TASMANIA TRIP:  A trip to Bare Island at La Peruse.  Bare Island is listed on the State Heritage Register.  It is significant as an almost completely intact example of late nineteenth century coastal defence technology.  The cost is $230, divided by the number of people going.  We will stop for morning tea somewhere lovely on the way, or maybe when we get there before the tour.  Lunch TBA.  Departure is at 9am.

Note:  All our Probus meetings are generally held on the third Tuesday of every month.  The next meeting will be held on the 18th of October, 2016.  The committee meetings are conducted in the Northbridge Golf Club, usually on the first Tuesday of the month.  Members are welcome to observe.
