President’s Report  -  16 May 2017

I am looking forward to the day trip to the Australian Botanic Gardens Mount Annan which Evelyn has organised for us next Tuesday, May 23.  As the name suggests, these (Australian ) gardens have a different emphasis to the sister Blue Mountains Botanic Gardens Mount Tomah.
We will be going to the largest gardens in Australia devoted to our native plants, particularly those of NSW.  With its sister gardens at Mt. Tomah, these two, each with their own speciality, are now an integral part of the Sydney Botanical Gardens Family.  After the discovery of the Wollemi Pine in 1994, previously thought to be extinct, it was cultivated from 1995 at Mt. Annan.  Eventually this became the source for the availability of the Wollemi for supply to the botanical gardens of the world, plus domestic demand.  (In the early years of cultivation the trees were so valuable they are reported to have been grown in steel cages to protect them from thieves!).
Our coach will take us on a tour for about an hour through much of the one thousand acres and five natural lakes comprising the gardens, with expert commentary from a staff guide.
And with door-to-door transport available here at our Northbridge meeting venue, we are assured of a pleasant and comfortable day.
