Good morning all. The four new members of the North Sydney Probus Club committee installed at the March meeting comprise President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. We four will rely heavily upon the combined experience and Club knowledge of those remaining members of the committee, for which we thank them in advance.
Your newly appointed committee had its first meeting this morning at 9 a.m., prior to our full meeting at the new starting time of 10:15 a.m. This will be the normal arrangement for future meetings. And so at this time there is little “news” to report, but members will receive an update at this meeting of any relevant decisions from this morning’s committee meeting.
Since the first Probus Club in Australia was formed at Hunters Hill in 1976, the organisation has grown into an Australia-wide movement comprising about 136,000 members in more than 1700 Clubs—and any Probus member is welcome to attend a Club meeting as a visitor anywhere in Australia that they may be visiting, ensuring instant hospitality from like-minded Probus members.
Finally I would like to remind members of one of the attractive benefits of Probus membership—Travel Insurance. Probus is one of the few organisations nowadays which will insure overseas travellers aged over 80 years. Most commercial travel insurance companies are imposing increasingly strict limits on insuring over 80’s, ranging from not insuring to strict conditions and high costs. I have had recent experience of Probus Travel Insurance and commend it to you. The one limitation is that applicants must be younger than 100 years of age!
The headmaster at one of our grandchildren’s schools recently commenced his monthly letter to parents, with the following:
Remember the wise parent who asked his child each day not “what did you learn today?”, but “What questions did you ask today?”.
Maybe this comment need not apply just to children? (Kevin D)

Probus Walkers: Tuesday 9th May 2017: Meadowbank to Silverwater via Bennelong Bridge.
The walk starts at Meadowbank Railway Station and after coffee at a nearby café, we continue over the old railway metal bridge to the path which takes us over the recently finished Bennelong Bridge. We follow the River Walk path past the Armoury until we reach Wilson Park. Lunch/refreshments will be at Dooley’s Waterview Club. Photo ID required. Walk classed as easy. Approx. 6.5 klms.
MEET: Town Hall Station Platform 2 at 9:15 am to catch 9:30 am train to Meadowbank.
Probus Outings: There will not be an April outing because the fourth Tuesday, the 25th, is ANZAC day,
Tuesday 23rd May: Mt. Annan Botanical Gardens. This garden displays a wide range of native plants. The cost will be $30 for the bus, plus the tour charge of $10 ($8 concession). The guide will take us around on our bus for about an hour. We should have a lovely display of autumn colours. We will lunch on site at Melaleuca House café/restaurant. People will have the opportunity to independently wander should they wish to do so. Bus departs at 9 am.
July outing is on Saturday 29th July: Metropole Hotel Katoomba for the replaying of old scripts of The Goon Show. The plan is to take the train to Katoomba on Saturday, for dinner and the show in the evening, and then return home by train on Sunday. We have already fixed bookings for this with the deposits paid, but if anyone else is interested in joining in I will see if further bookings are available.
Note: All our Probus meetings are generally held on the third Tuesday of every month, at 10:15 am. The next meeting will be held on the 16th of May 2017. The committee meetings are conducted in the Northbridge Golf Club on the same day as the Club meeting, commencing at 9:00 am. Members are welcome to observe.
