NEWSLETTER AUGUST 15, 2017
From the President
I think the July issue of the Probus Magazine Active Retirees was one of the most interesting recent issues I have read….the article on dementia will have only a limited interest to some members, the second article on Going Cashless will certainly affect every one of us.
“Living Well with Dementia” was written by a medical doctor and relates the diagnosis of her father with dementia, and how she and he together dealt positively with the diagnosis. She writes that “dementia is still very much a medical anomaly. It is a broad and imprecise term for over 100 conditions…”
Another article by the same author suggests “there are three key ways to boost our brains and halve our risk of dementia: “mental stimulation, social connection and regular physical exercise.
Well worth a read.
“Going Cashless” is the title of an article outlining the inevitable day, sooner rather than later, when Australia will join the Scandinavian three and numerous other countries in almost completely eliminating cash as a means of payment. Already between 50% and 60% by volume of transactions in Australia are cashless.
“Late last year Citibank became the first Australian bank to announce that some of its branches (as from late 2016) would no longer deal in cash. Instead…”
The article tells us that the Reserve Bank of Australia is working to introduce the New Payments Platform (NPP) of which “the first stage will come into effect later this year”.
The NPP “will allow you to make payments to a person using just their phone number, email or BSB”. This will be a simpler and quicker expansion of our current banking system.
Australia is usually included in the top ten listing of countries “going cashless”. The technology already exists and the NPP will hasten its introduction.
