Newsletter 311                                        21 November 2017

From the President:  I believe the Seniors Expo is a very special opportunity for Probus members, and all attendees, to obtain invaluable information about services and facilities available to Seniors. . .local councils in particular offer very “hands on” assistance.  Pick up their literature, and ask questions.
Local MP Trent Zimmerman says in his letter of invitation to the Expo, “I organise the Expo to showcase local community groups, businesses, aged care services and government agencies that are providing services to senior Australians.”
Last year over one-thousand people attended. . .many discovered new services and opportunities close to home, which they did not know were available.

Program of Activities

Guest Speakers:  Today we welcome Tony Park, who will tell us about the book he has written about Africa.  In January, Sue Pedlet will join us to talk about Collaboration with Art in Japan.

Probus Walkers:  Tuesday 5th December:  Cremorne to Mosman Bay.  Our traditional “Kent Memorial” walk will again this year take us by ferry to Cremorne, where a coffee can be enjoyed, then proceed to walk to Cremorne Point and continue around the harbourside scenic park to Mosman Bay.  At Mosman, we catch a bus to Spit Junction for lunch at The Mosman Hotel.  Non-walkers are welcome to join us at the hotel around 12 noon.
MEET:  At Circular Quay, Wharf 4, at 9:30am.

Probus Outings: Tuesday 28th November:  A trip to Bare Island will be our last outing for 2017, with our Christmas Lunch on 12th December.  Captain Cook first spotted the area now known as Bare Island in 1770, and referred to it in his journal as ’a small bare island.’ The fort was built in the early 1880x to protect Sydney’s back door.  It was in operation until 1908, after which time it became Australia’s first war veteran’s home.  Bare Island Fort’s structure provides a picturesque backdrop with spectacular scenic views over La Perouse.  This location served for some thrilling action sequences in the Hollywood film, “Mission Impossible 2.”
The cost of the tour is $260, which will be spread over the number of people attending, so will be collected on the bus.  The cost of the bus is $30 each.  Lunch will be at Yarra Bay Sailing Club on the shores of Phillip Bay.  Departure is at 9am.  Bring some friends to spread the cost, and enjoy the scenery!

Last month we visited Glenalvon House in Campbelltown.  I was in South Australia at the time, so Jeanette Garner kindly facilitated the outing.  Feedback on the day has been positive—thanks so much, Jeanette!
