From the President:
In thinking about a Probus-related subject upon which I could comment in my allotted space, I glanced again at the minutes of our last meeting, and realised the diversity of continuing and special activities in this Club, all organised for our participation by enthusiastic volunteers.
OUTINGS ranging from whale watching outside Sydney Heads, to visiting the tulip festival in Bowral.
WALKS in interesting areas of Sydney suburbia, somewhere different each month.
TALKS on subjects as varied as Australian history to life on a submarine (by a speaker who lived it!).
HOLIDAY TRIPS Twenty members have booked for the six days trip to Longreach early next year. New Caledonia is the possible venue for our 2019 trip.
CHRISTMAS LUNCHEON for members and their spouse/partner, on December 12.
REGULAR LUNCHEON for interested members at a selected local venue.
And all the maintenance and regular activities by our Committee members, which contribute to the pleasure we derive from our Probus membership.
THANK YOU ALL, AND I ASK EVERY MEMBER TO CONSIDER NOMINATING A FRIEND (or 2) FOR MEMBERSHIP—we want to break through the “magic 60” membership.
Best wishes to all, Kevin
Membership report: Our membership is currently 52, 28 women and 24 men.
Many Happy Returns of the Day for your October Birthday: Peter M08, George B 10, Eleanor S26, Jenny S27, and Tony K 30.
Note: All our Probus meetings are generally held on the third Tuesday of every month at 10:15am. The next meeting will be held on 21st November 2017. The committee meetings are conducted in the Northbridge Golf Club at 9:00am on the same day as the meeting. Members are welcome to attend.
Program of Activities
Guest Speakers: Today we welcome Marie Palmer, who will tell us about the Penguin Colony at Manly. Next month, author Tony Park will talk about the books he has written about Africa.
Probus Walkers: Tuesday 14th November: Bronte to Bondi Beach. This walk is an annual event for our walkers which is very enjoyable. Although the Sculptures-by-the -Sea exhibits will be over, the upside is there will be fewer people along the pathway. The path has a gradient classed as medium with many steps. Lunch/refreshments will be at The Icebergs Club (photo ID required).
MEET: At Liverpool Street bus stop (just around the corner from the Museum Station, Elizabeth St.,) at 9:30am to catch the next 440 bus to Bronte.

The weather was overcast and cool which was perfect for our last walk through the Macquarie Cemetery and continuing into the Lane Cove National Park. Most of the walkers were unaware of the large extent of land the cemetery covers. After coffee at the café we continued into the park and the first beautiful sight we saw was a king parrot feasting on a flowering gum just a meter away at eye level, quite oblivious of us. We also saw many water dragons both large and small posing along the river bank. We all enjoyed our lunch at the Orchard Tavern.
Probus Outings: Tuesday 24th October: We will visit Glenalvon House in Campbelltown. This is a classic State Heritage Listed Georgian sandstone town house built in 1840. It is set in a large heritage garden which should still—with a little bit of luck—be in Spring bloom. We will have morning tea there, and we are booked into The Camden Sports Club for lunch. Departure will be at 9:00am. Charges are $10 for the venue, tour and morning tea, and $30 for the bus.

In September we went to Bowral to view the tulips, which despite prior reports of a poor showing appeared to have bloomed into glorious colour by the time we arrived! We lunched at the Mittagong RSL, a place I am recommending. Should you decide to go there, take note of the mural on the wall at the entry to the toilets!
Last Tuesday of the Month Luncheon, 31st October: At The Rag and Famish Hotel, 199 Miller Street, North Sydney, 9955 1257, at 12 Noon. Modern Australian cuisine.
