Newsletter 312                                  16 January 2018

From the President:

I wish every member, and your families, a happy, healthy and safe 2018.  (As a side comment, I include the “safe” in my wishes following a conversation with a paramedic who said that NSW Ambulance figures reveal that 60%, six out of every ten!, calls received for an ambulance, are for “domestic accidents”, of which “bathroom accidents” (falls mostly) are the #1).  We all take the safety of our home for granted, but in fact it can be a dangerous place unless we exercise increasing care as the years go by.

2017 in Review:  North Sydney Probus Club concluded 2017 on two very happy and positive notes which certainly point to the interest and vigour of our membership.
1. We ended the year with 56 members + 2 ladies to be welcomed to the Club hopefully at our January meeting.  We are well on our way to breaking our 60 members goal set earlier in the year.  The 17 different postcodes of our membership illustrates the wide geographical area covered.
2. Forty-six members including a few visitors sat down to our Christmas luncheon with much “fellowship, friendship and fun”, described by the Probus governing body as the “core values” of the organisation.
The happy gathering was so well organised by Oriel, Evelyn and their willing helpers, with raffles and door prizes donated by members.  Evelyn demonstrated her singing talents and Clive showed his skill as a story narrator.  Thank you all.

Probus Head Office has advised that the capitation fee each Club pays to PSPL for their management and support services has been set at $13.50 per member which is covered by existing funds.  The Probus national magazine, Active Retirees, remains at $10.00 for the six issues published each year.  I urge all members to pick up a free copy from our check-in desk each two months when it appears.  Each issue contains articles of general interest, as well as the inevitable advertising content which helps subsidise the $1.67 the Club pays for each copy.

Membership Report:  Current membership is 56, 31 women and 25 men.  At our November meeting former member Susan Myers was welcomed back, and Fran McLoughlin was inducted as a new member.

Many Happy Returns of the Day for your January Birthday:  Shelagh K 05, Nita R 05, Barrie G
 11, Judy McD 12, Judy I 21, Josephine T22, Syd B 26, and Peter Mac, 29.

Note:  All our Probus meetings are generally held on the third Tuesday of every month at 10:15am.  The next meeting will be held on the 20th of February 2018.  The committee meetings are conducted in the Northbridge Golf Club at 9:00am on the same day as the meeting.  Members are welcome to attend.
