 Newsletter 313                             20 February 2018 \

From the President:

Congratulations to The Probus Club of North Sydney—35 years old March 8, 2018.
I repeat the relevant details of our Club’s Foundation, for the benefit of newer members and any members who may have forgotten the essential details of this rather historic event 35 years ago.

+   Decision to establish the “first mixed Probus Club in Australia, or even in the  world!” was taken at an informal gathering in a private home at Wollstonecraft  on February 8, 1983.  Present were Janet Harrison-Ford and nine men.  (Source:  30th Anniversary Historical Review booklet produced by The Probus Club of  North Sydney, April 2013).

+    First Ordinary meeting Probus Club of North Sydney held at North Sydney Leagues Club March 8, 1983.

The first Probus Clubs in the South Pacific region were established at Kapiti Coast in New Zealand in 1974 and Hunter’s Hill, NSW, in 1976.
By 1981 there were 44 Clubs in Australia and New Zealand.  Today, over 1300 Clubs and more than 120,000 members are testimony to the value of “the most widely recognised organisation for active retirees, in fostering the true spirit of Probus— friendship, fellowship and fun.” (Source: Probus Club Handbook 2017-18.)

As a recent “newcomer” to the North Sydney Club, it is apparent that the success of the Club is due to the continuing enthusiasm and input of so many committed members in organising the diverse activities which this Club offers it members. Thank you, all—Kevin D

Membership Report:  Our current membership is 56, 32 female and 24 male.  At our January meeting we welcomed Joan Brodie as a new member.  However, sadly in the past couple of weeks two of our long standing, although inactive, members, Jenny Subbaraman and Rhona Shaw, passed away.

Many Happy Returns of the Day for your February Birthday:  Joan H 04, Fran McL 04, and Brenda O 26.

Note: All our Probus meetings are generally held on the third Tuesday of every month at 10:15 am.  The next meeting will be held on the 20th of March 2018.  The committee meetings are conducted in the Northbridge Golf Club at 9:00am on the same day as the meeting.  Members are welcome to attend.

Program of Activities

Guest Speaker:  Today we welcome Beth Mott, who will talk to us about the Powerful Owl project.  Next month is our AGM, program to be announced.

Probus Walkers:  Tuesday 13th March 2018.  Bellevue Hill to Double Bay via Cooper’s Park.
A very pleasant and easy walk through Cooper’s Park.  There are steps going down which do not have a handrail but are very negotiable.  Features of the park are handmade caves which were commissioned by the Government during the depression to give employment to local workers.  There is also a very pleasant coffee shop which we will no doubt visit.  Walk continues from the park across playing fields and ends in Double Bay.  There are many cafes where we can have lunch/refreshments.  Walk classed as easy with steps, approx. 3.5 kms.

MEET:  At 9:30am at Elizabeth Street, City bus stop (near St. James Station) to catch the 389 bus at 9:40am to Bondi bus interchange where we then catch bus 379 from stand D to start of walk.

Probus Outings: Tuesday 27th February.  Hazelhurst Regional Gallery and Arts Centre.
We are travelling to Gymea in the bus.  Departure at 9:00am.  The Hazelhurst Regional Gallery and Arts Centre is an arts complex located on The Kingsway in the suburb of Gymea, and is a leading regional gallery and art centre. We will stop on the way for morning tea, and will have lunch on site.  The complex adjoins a lovely park which is worth exploring.  Cost:  $30 for the bus.

Tuesday 27th March:  The Concourse at Chatswood.
We must be at the box office at 10:00am, where we will meet.  A staff member will attend the box office at this time to give us a tour of the facility.  If no one is there, the tour does not happen.  The tour is free.  We can have lunch on site.
