 Newsletter 350                                       August 2021

President’s report:  Your committee met again this month by Zoom to make sure the wheels of Probus keep turning.

There are quite a few matters below where I ask for your feedback.  Please would you mind setting aside a few minutes to respond to my various requests.

Noreen and Peter Bare working on a powerpoint presentation of our activities for Probus South Pacific to run during October.  They are particularly asking for photos from you, the members.  Good photos from trips away, e.g. Tasmania, Queensland, Norfolk Island, would be particularly welcome.  We also want photos of local outings, lunches and walks.  If you could let Noreen and Peter know where the photos were taken, that would be appreciated as well.  Send them to noreenbyrne24@gmail.com.

Our Probus Day meeting is unlikely to be possible in October.  We are now hoping to have a “Get to know us” meeting in February 2022 when we will invite prospective new members to join us.

I wrote about the “Be Connected” program last month.  There was not enough interest to pursue this further.  However, if you do want to improve your computer skills, have a look at what is available at:

                             https://beconnected.esafety.gov.au/

The Byrnes also told us about computer clubs that run online courses.  Look for ASCCA (Australian Seniors Computer Clubs Association).  There is a fee to become a member, but they also run free courses.

See https://www.ascca.org.au/.  Then Computer Pals at Lindfield also run online courses.  Check their website at https://www.computerpals.org/.

From Douglas Irvin:  An online group had been going but it was a complicated website.  As many people are now using Zoom, the suggestion is to have many small Probus groups.  They can meet regularly to discuss their favourite topic be it COVID, gardening, history, films, books, cooking, travel, gossip, health, etc.

A leader is needed for each group to send out the Zoom invitation.  People can be in multiple groups and at a time that suits them. This will keep up the social contacts in Probus.  Can people please contact me to set up a group.

Probus Walkers:  “The Colony History Walk:  Customs House to Millers Point”  that was scheduled for July will be our first once lockdown restrictions are lifted.  Patrick Wale will be our leader for this walk.

Probus Outings:  Outings will resume once lockdown restrictions are lifted.

Fifth Tuesday movie:  31st August cancelled.  Next 5th Tuesday will be 30th November.

Events:  The theatre event planned for October, “Come From Away” is unlikely to be possible in October.  Peggy and Janice will ask for a refund.

(Note:  The new musical playing in country NSW:  “Don’t Come From Away”!)

Membership report:  Our membership remains unchanged at 52:  34 women and 18 men.

Many Happy Returns of the Day for your August Birthday:  Jeanette G 07, Ian S 10, Maurice O12, Valerie W 13, and Annika T 24.
