PROBUS CLUB NORTH SYDNEY

president’s report

At last, spring is in the air, and our outing to the Ku-ringai Chase Wildflower garden and the walk  through the bushland from Artarmon to Cammeray benefited from great weather ( if a little windy  at times during the walk!).

As I am sure you are all aware, October marks the 50th anniversary of Probus in Australia. We are  fortunate that North Sydney Council has generously donated $2000 towards a celebration of this  landmark anniversary.

On Friday 2nd October, the Probus Cluster group is hosting a morning tea with entertainment  provided at Crows Nest. Mary Ann has been involved in the planning, and it promises to be a  great morning. You will have received an email several weeks ago advising of this. I hope to see  many of you there. I would like to thank Mary Ann for all the great work she does on behalf of the  club at the cluster.

september movie

The movie will be on Tuesday 22nd

September at Cremorne Orpheum. Time

tba. PG rated, 80 minutes.

Maigret and the Dead Lover is a detective

story based on George Simenon’s beloved

Parisian detective - a French counterpart to

Agatha Christie’s Poirot. Time to be

advised.

Inspector Maigret, played by Denis

Podalydes in a tremendous performance, is

summoned to sort out the shooting death

of the former ambassador. This is a

compelling mystery that also serves as a

thoughtful examination of modern life’s key

concerns ie hierarchy, aging and the very

different worlds that money creates.

august movie report

On Tuesday 25th August several Probians met at Siborg CafĂ© for lunch then proceeded to the  Cremorne Orpheum to watch “Holy Days”. A light hearted, fun movie with a good cast & beautiful  scenery, set in New Zealand.

A very pleasant afternoon was had by all.

october outing

september outing report - ku-ring-gai  wildflower gardens

Twenty-one members enjoyed the outing to the Ku-ring-gai Wildflower Gardens, with  plenty to see and do throughout the morning.

Our visit began with some time to explore the nursery and Visitors Centre, where  members could browse the plants and learn more about the gardens and the local  environment.

We then enjoyed a delightful bush morning tea, complete with freshly made scones and  jams prepared from native fruits. It was a lovely opportunity to relax and catch up with  fellow members while enjoying the peaceful bushland surroundings.

After morning tea, we took a short walk through the gardens,

admiring the native bush and some of the sculptures displayed as

part of the Sculpture Trail. The sculptures were particularly

interesting, as each had been created from recycled and

repurposed materials and transformed into imaginative works of

art. They were displayed along the track to Dampier’s Clearing,

adding an artistic element to our bush walk.

The outing continued with an introduction to a variety of native

animals that are cared for in captivity at the Visitors Centre.

It was a thoroughly enjoyable outing, combining nature, art, local

wildlife and good company — a wonderful day.

mystery tour report

On Thursday 3rd September Margaret B & Susan G joined 30 other Northern  Sydney Probians on a Mystery Tour, as guests of On Course Tours. An early start from  Gordon Station had us all guessing where Mick the driver would take us to.

We were joined by Judith Dunn OAM, local historian, tour guide & public speaker. Our  first stop was morning tea at Lake Parramatta. Originally Parramatta’s water supply, the  dam & nature reserve has an abundance of wildlife, bushland, picnic facilities, walking

tracks & a cafe. Over the next few hours we drove & walked around the significant  historical sites of Parramatta: The Gaol, Female Factory, Orphan Schools, Hospitals,  Churches, Parramatta Park, Old Government House, Elizabeth & Experiment Farms,  Western Sydney University, The Whitlam Library & Gallipoli Mosque.

Judith (dressed in period costume) entertained and  informed us of the early history of the colony, the colourful  characters, tragic tales, indigenous history, social &  political customs of the day & much more. Mick then drove us  around Rookwood Cemetery (largest in the Southern  Hemisphere) whilst Judith kept us well entertained with her  stories. It was all fascinating. Strathfield Golf Club was the  venue for a delicious two course lunch & drinks.

A presentation by On Course Tours was followed by a brainstorming session to create the  ideal Probus tour. We returned home with many ideas for new & interesting tours for our

member spotlight - Louise L

Editor’s Note: In this new section of the Probus Newsletter members are invited to share a  short story about their life. The aim is simple: help us get to know each other better and  to spark conversations. Here is Louise’s Story:

then and now

My name is Louise Le which is my maiden name as in the province of Quebec  where I was married, a woman’s legal name is her name at birth. I was born in Ottawa  Canada in a French speaking family, the eldest of four children.

I married in my early twenties and moved across the river to the province of Quebec  where I had my daughter.

I worked as a social worker but later discovered a love of clay and became a potter. I  taught pottery and had a shop where I promoted the local artists. These were meaningful  years in my life. A successful career as a real estate agent followed until I met my present  husband and moved to Luxembourg, then Australia.

Now I live with my husband Ted who shares my love of nature and the outdoors as well as  a strong belief in doing all we can to age in good health. We travel together to remote  locations where we discover different cultures and amazing natural wonders as well as  regular trips to Canada to see our family including our grand daughter.

Walking, snorkelling and surf skiing are some activities that we share. I also love line  dancing, Tai Chi, exercise classes, swimming and catching up with friends. I love music  and enjoy live concerts and musicals.

I enjoy Probus for the social connections and learning possibilities it encourages through  its numerous activities and talks.

I turned 80 this year but I feel I still have so much to discover and enjoy in life. Let’s all  enjoy life together.
