THE PROBUS CLUB OF NORTH SYDNEY

Newsletter 380 18 June, 2024

PRESIDENT’S REPORT - Douglas

Barbara and I were booked to go to the Probus South Pacific Information Day  on the 5th of June. Due to an urgent late matter Barbara wasn't able to  attend. Mary Ann was able to go in her place. About 60 club  representatives attended.

There was discussion about the usual activities, walks, talks, travel and  outings. A vital function is succession planning. This is in the background and  is vital . A Club with 90 members recently folded up due to a lack of  Committee members.

I ask all members to consider supporting the Club through acting on the  Committee.

Another scheme is groups of local Clubs coordinate activities to support each  other. More fun. I will be working on this.

Sometimes people who arrive very early go to the coffee shop just up the  road. We did this recently and asked if they would allow a Probus notice in  their window. Go check out the new notice there.

Transport Numbers from My Aged Care - reminder from  Jocelyn

Although we now have enough people registered with Aged Care, the Outings  Committee is of the opinion that members should still seek to obtain a  Transport Number from Aged Care in case the rules are altered at any  stage.

Note: Future shared Outings with the Waverton Club may require an Aged  Care Transport Number.

Please note that Probus members who already use Community Transport do  NOT need a Transport Number.

OUTING ON TUESDAY 2 JULY

LUCY OSBURN NIGHTINGALE MUSEUM

SYDNEY EYE HOSPITAL, 8 MACQUARIE ST. SYDNEY

Please note that there is a lift to the museum but walking frames  are not allowed as the building is quite narrow

Our guided tour will commence at 10.30 a.m., takes approximately 1 to 1-1/2  hours and will cost $10 a head. Please bring the correct money which  we will collect while we are having coffee.

Suggest we meet for coffee between 9.45a.m. and 10.15am. at the Porcellino  Café inside the grounds of the Sydney Eye Hospital at 8 Macquarie Street.  The entrance to the Hospital café is a few yards to the left of the “Il Porcellino”  (Pig Statue) on Macquarie Street (opposite Martin Place).

Originally called the Rum Hospital because convicts were paid to import rum  for re-sale, Sydney Hospital was founded as a convict hospital in 1788 and  was the first building on Macquarie St. It was completed in 1894 and the two  outer wings remain today in the form of The Mint and NSW Parliament  House.

In 1868 what is now called the Nightingale Wing was completed, and the  Lucy Osburn-Nightingale Museum is located on the first floor. The museum is  home to a collection of medical equipment, records, implements and  pathology that portrays the history of nursing and medicine in Australia from  the arrival of the first fleet in 1788.

Visitors can walk back in time into original furnished rooms, view photos,  artefacts, surgical instruments, costumes and the oldest morbid anatomy  specimens in Australia.

We will lunch at the Petit Jardin Café in the crypt of St. James Church on  Macquarie Street near the Law Courts at 12 noon.

I will need to let the Café know how many will be attending for lunch.  So please see me at the Outings Table at the next Probus meeting or let  me know by email (jonem@bigpond.com.au)
