THE PROBUS CLUB OF NORTH SYDNEY
Newsletter 382 20 August, 2024
PRESIDENT’S REPORT - Douglas
The Christmas in July was reported to be very successful. A big thank you to Jeanette for finding the venue and organising. This could be an annual event for the Club. Other Clubs could join us too.
The proposed trip to Mayfield Gardens and Bathurst has been called off due to lack of numbers. I’ll work on going with other Clubs at the end of October next year. Mary Ann and I are doing a similar trip by car in September. We will let everyone know how it went.
Noreen is still scouting around for a Melbourne Cup Afternoon. Watch this space.

SPEAKERS - report from Patrick
• Unfortunately, Michele Bell has been ill and has had to postpone her talk this month. The speaker for August will now be Annette Higgs and the topic relates to her family’s long history in Tasmania. She has written a book on the family’s experiences there over several generations.
• In September, Christine Stewart will give a talk on the history of one of the oldest pubs in Australia called The Golden Fleece (more usually known as Collit’s Inn after the original owners). The original building still stands in Little Hartley, just beyond the Blue Mountains, and Christine has also written a book on its history.
Holiday to Samoa with On Course Tours - report from Paul & Brenda
Jocelyn, Judy, Marie, Paul & Brenda joined Probus members
from Waverton and Frenchs Forest Clubs, plus some friends, to
make a congenial group of 24 for a 9 day trip to Samoa. The sun
shone most of the time and the sea temperature was a tempting
28C ! We visited 3 of the 4 inhabited islands, seeing dramatic
scenery en route and learning about their customs and lifestyle.
The Samoans made us very welcome wherever we went and
succeeded in making this a memorable holiday.
Outing to Chinese Garden of Friendship - report from Robyn and Geoff
The sun was shining for our outing on 6 August. The 20 people who attended commenced our day with coffee and pastries at Alma Café in the Darling Precinct. After a short walk we were met at the Gardens by our delightful Chinese Guide, Ming, who explained the history, heritage and significance of the rocks, plants and structures. She covered the design and layout of the Garden and provided an excellent introduction to Chinese culture and how it is captured in the physical presence of the groves of trees, bamboos and the placement of water features and rocks imported from Mainland China as well as sourced from NSW’s Central West. Meandering along the pathways and overbridges, hearing the sound of the waterfalls gave a feeling of tranquility in the midst of the bustling City. The Koi were a touch of colour in the ponds and we saw water
dragons sunning themselves on the rocks and hiding
along the pathways.
After the Gardens we had lunch at the Darling Pavilion
where we continued chatting and enjoying each others
company.
Thank you everyone for coming and making the day so
enjoyable.

MOVIES - report from Peter W
The film outing is scheduled for Tuesday 27 August at the Cremorne Orpheum and depending on the time slots and programme schedule the film will be either:
• The teacher who promised the sea
Inspired by extraordinary true events this follows a charismatic teacher whose progressive outlook transforms the lives of a group of young students on the eve of the Spanish Civil War, but puts him in the crossfire of local authorities. It was a hit at the Spanish box office and is proving to be popular in Australia.
OR
• It ends with us
This recently released film tackles some difficult issues in relationships. It is based on a successful book by Colleen Hoover and deals with domestic abuse and stars Justin Baldoni and Blake Lively.
Probably during week commencing Monday 19 August I will be able to be more specific on which of the two movies has been selected, but by all means provide me with your choice if you have one.
