This is my first report as the Vice President (or the President of Vice) however one might like to view it, in the absence of Maurice O who remains overseas for the next little while! Indeed it was after I agreed to this job that he advised me he would be away for 5 months–just to let you know! Hello Maurice, as you enjoy the northern summer, while we are freezing down here as winter has finally come to the fore!
It is with regret I advise you of the death of Jim McKeegan who died suddenly on Thursday, 22nd May. A condolence card was prepared by the committee and posted to the family on your behalf.
I would like to draw your attention to our outing this month, which is to the ABC in Ultimo. I have looked at the website and found that the June sale is on–we have a 10% discount on the group tour!
Our financial situation remains in good shape, as we still have not paid PSPL the requested fees. This will be reviewed again at the next committee meeting.
Membership report: Last month we inducted Barrie and Jeanette Garner. Sadly we learned that Jim McKeegan recently passed away unexpectedly. We also received a resignation letter from Norma May. Thus our numbers remain at 60 (36 women and 24 men).
Many happy returns for your June birthdays: Janet B 03, Judy C 06, Judy M10, Elizabeth C 16, Ches W 21, and Colin N 26.
PROGRAM OF ACTIVITIES
GUEST SPEAKERS; Today we welcome Vashti Farrer, author of “Ellen Thompson–Beyond a Reasonable Doubt.” Next month Dr. Bruce Horsfield will talk to us about the making of a documentary on the SAS.
PROBUS WALKERS:
Tuesday 8th July 2014. Huntley’s Point to Gladesville. Upon arriving at Huntley’s Point by ferry, we will walk to Gladesville Reserve and then continue through quiet streets and walk the Tarban Creek Environmental Walk. Walk continues through more quiet streets until Punt Road. From here we will continue to lunch/refreshments at a French Restaurant in Gladesville. There is also a lovely chocolate shop nearby. Great views can be seen along the Tarban Creek. Walk classed as easy, approximately 5 klms, 2.5 hrs. MEET: Wharf 5, Circular Quay at 9:20 am to catch the 9:37 am ferry.
OUTINGS:
Tuesday 24th June: Names and money will be taken today for a behind the scenes tour of the ABC at 700 Harris Street, Ultimo. The tour is likely to include a visit to one or two of the digital production studios, an on air studio and news studio plus control room, all of which should be a fantastic experience. We will meet at 9:30am in the foyer of the ABC, which is only a short walk from Central Station, and there is also the 443 bus from York St., which goes along Harris St. The cost of the tour is $6.50 for seniors, and should you register for this tour you will be entitled to a 10% discount on any purchase at the ABC bookshop. This should be a very interesting insight as to what goes on behind the scenes of a radio and television station. Lunch will be decided on the day by your choice of a nearby venue.
Tuesday 22nd July: Outing to visit Ian Savins’ home in St. Ives, to see and hear his beautifully restored vintage pianola organs. These are amazing instruments and this is a rare opportunity for our members. Lunch TBA. Bus leaves at 9:30 am. Cost: $30.
Note: All our Probus meetings are generally held on the third Tuesday of every month. The next meeting, in July 2014, will be held on Tuesday, the 15th. The Committee meetings are conducted in the NSLC Bistro area, usually on the first Tuesday of the month. Members are welcome to observe.
