President’s Report - July 2014
Looking forward to our outing next week, visiting Ian Savins’ home and his amazing collection of vintage pianos, which he keeps in good working order.
Don’t forget the dinner meeting this month, on 29th July. It should be a good evening, but unfortunately I will be unable to attend due to a swimming club AGM which I must chair.
Probus South Pacific Limited Reform Group is attempting to have a meeting with the new chairman of PSPL, Peter Carroll. The outcome of this meeting when and if it occurs should be of considerable interest. Clive Williams has been doing a great deal of good work on this matter, and his report on it today should be very interesting.
Valerie is making good progress regarding our trip to Armidale and the tours we will take. I understand the motel rooms are now secured.
The committee discussed the possibility of having luncheons on the Probus Walker days in January and February when it is too hot to have walks. The idea will be further examined.
Membership report: Our membership remains at 60 (36 women and 24 men).
Many happy returnms of the day for your July birthday: Talia W 07, Colin W 08, Oriel T 12, George T 13, and Ann G 26.
PROGRAM OF ACTIVITIES
GUEST SPEAKERS: Today we welcome Brian Boettcher, who will speak to us about the history of the RAAF. Next month, Michael Peters joins us and his topic is “Wellington and Napoleon.”
PROBUS WALKERS:
Tuesday 12th August: A walk to Balls Head. Meet at Waverton Station at 10:30 am, where we will have coffee, and then walk down to inspect the Sustainable Garden at the old Coal Loader (there are quite a few steps here). We then continue through the old tunnel, a curious relic of the age of steam, and along a bush track to Balls Head, one of our best harbourside lookouts with some very well preserved bush. We will have a picnic lunch here before making our way back up the hill to Waverton Station. This is a medium walk, about 5 km. Please bring your own picnic lunch.
Tuesday 9th September: Gunners’ Walk, North Head. Upon arriving at Manly we catch the 9:38 am bus to North Head for the start of our walk. We will first visit the Information Centre. This walk is easy but has long flat steps en route. There are great views of the city, harbour and ocean. We can explore the Quarantine cemetery which dates back to 1881, where victims of the bubonic plague and smallpox are buried. After coffee at the North Head cafe we will continue our walk at North Head and wend our way down to Fairy Bower and continue to the Corso for lunch/refreshments. Walk approx. 4 klms. MEET: At the Bus Stop Pacific Highway, St. Leonard’s Station at 8:30 am to catch the 8:49 am 144 bus to Manly. At Manly Stand J we connect with the 135 bus at 9:38 am to North Head. (The l35 bus only runs hourly.) OUTINGS:
Tuesday 22nd July: Outing to visit Ian S home in St. Ives, to see and hear his beautifully restored player pianos. These are amazing instruments and this is a rare opportunity for our members. Lunch will be at the Blue Gum Hotel at Wiatara. Bus leaves at 9:30 am. Cost: $30.
Tuesday 26th August: Names and money taken today for this outing to Norah Head Lighthouse. There will be a stop at Toukley District Art and Information Centre on the way. Once at Norah Head you will be able to take a short walk around the lighthouse, and explore the beautiful buildings, or just admire the wonderful view. Lunch will be at Norah Head Bowling Club. This will be a great scenic outing. Bus leaves at 9:00 am. Cost: $30.
Note: All our Probus meetings are generally held on the third Tuesday of every month. The next meeting, in August 2014, will be held on Tuesday, the 19th. The Committee meetings are conducted in the NSLC Bistro area, usually on the first Tuesday of the month. Members are welcome to observe.
