President’s Report - August 2014.
Those of us who visited Ian S’s home last month had a lovely time learning about the history of the various pianolas he has, and listening to a variety of rolls being played on them.  Thank you so much Ian, for again opening up your home to us.  We had morning tea in the sun on his front lawn.  We also learned that Peter B can play a bit of a mean tune! I think we all enjoyed the Blue Gum Hotel at Waitara where we had lunch.
Following correspondence with both Probus South Pacific Limited Reform Group and Probus
South Pacific Ltd., your committee has paid the capitation fees required, “under protest.”
We needed to continue to have the insurance cover among other matters.  Clive Williams will talk about this at our meeting today.
Valerie W will give us further information today on the October trip to Armidale.
In July, our expected speaker did not arrive and we were treated to stories from the lives of a number of our members.  Peter B spoke of his work conducting mediation to resolve dispute issues, also of some of his experiences at the Ensemble Theatre.  Lis T told of how she developed her interest in Australia and how she attained this goal–to our advantage, I am sure we would all agree! Judy C told us of her experiences on her recent trip to Cuba, the Caribbean and to Spain.  Then we had Clive W speak of his recent visit to Croatia and Vienna. As a committee we have explored bringing more of our members stories to our meetings–it is a wonderful way to get to know each other.
Today we look forward to a presentation from Michael Peters on the subject of “Wellington and Napoleon.”
On 27th September, Maurice O and Kristina T will be returning home to
Sydney from Sweden.  He has asked me to add to this notification, “Maurice knows that he left the care of the committee and Club in very capable hands.”  He will be back in his rightful place in October!
Membership report:  We have received a resignation from Jenny C and are inducting Judy I.  So our numbers continue at 60 (36 women and 24 men).
Many Happy Returns of the day for your August Birthday:   Arthur P 04, Jeanette G 07, Ian S 10, Pamela G-H 12, Maurice O 12, Valerie W 13, Marlene T 18, and Jill C 24.

PROGRAM OF ACTIVITIES
GUEST SPEAKERS: Today we welcome Michael Peters, who will speak to us on “Wellington and Napoleon.”
PROBUS  WALKERS:
Tuesday 9th September:  Gunners’ Walk, North Head.  Upon arriving at Manly we catch the 9:38 am bus to North Head for the start of our walk.  We will first visit the Information Centre.  This walk is easy but has long flat steps en route.  There are great views of the city, harbour and ocean.  We can explore the Quarantine cemetery which dates back to 1881, where victims of the bubonic plague and smallpox are buried.  After coffee at the North Head cafe we will continue our walk at North Head and wend our way down to Fairy Bower and continue to the Corso for lunch/refreshments.  Walk approx. 4 klms.  MEET:  At the Bus Stop Pacific Highway, St. Leonard’s Station at 8:30 am to catch the 8:49 am 144 bus to Manly.  At Manly Stand J we connect with the 135 bus at 9:38 am to North Head.  (The 135 bus only runs hourly.)
OUTINGS:
Tuesday 26th August:  Names and money taken today for this outing to Norah
Head Lighthouse.  There will be a stop at Toukley District Art and Information
Centre where we will have morning tea in the park near by.  Once at Norah Head you will be able to take one of the short walks around the lighthouse. I have arranged a tour at a cost of $6, or $5 if there are 10 people or more.  There are 96 stairs to climb to the top for those interested or who just wish to admire the beautiful view.  (Tour guides are volunteers.)  Lunch will be at Norah Head Bowling Club.  Bus leaves at 9 a.m.  Cost $30.
Tuesday 23rd September:  Names and money taken for this outing to visit the
Bowral Tulip Festival.  This is really a lovely outing to see the beautiful blossoms and flowers.  There is also a gift shop to check out.  There is a small fee of $5 to enter the gardens, to be paid on the day.  Don’t forget to bring your cameras! Bus leaves at 9 a.m.  Cost $30.
NOTICE:  Our “away” trip to Armidale, in October, from Sunday the 26th to Friday the 31st., has four vacancies available!  Trip organiser Valerie W has put together a selection of very interesting tours and booked comfortable accommodation in this beautiful Northern Tablelands city, and hopes members will come forward to make up the numbers.  It promises to be a most delightful outing!  Please contact Valerie on 9953-3873 for further details.
Note:  All our Probus meetings are generally held on the third Tuesday of every month.  The next meeting, in September 2014, will be held on Tuesday, the 16th.  The committee meetings are conducted in the NSLC Bistro area, usually on the first Tuesday of the month.  Members are welcome to observe.
