President’s Report
It is good to be back and see and meet our friends and colleagues.  I must thank the committee for all their good work in my absence.  I was able to keep in touch via the newsletter and with communications from our secretary, Clive W.  I thank you all.
The most important event for this month is Valerie’s Armidale trip, and I am sure it is well organised and will prove to be most enjoyable.
The other matter of importance concerns Probus South Pacific Limited.  It is of concern that the PSPL financial report was available only some months after their AGM but at long last it is published.  The Probus Reform Group has some rather cutting things to say about their finances but is awaiting more informed opinion from members of Probus who are/were accountants.
It was also proposed that Bob M and Clive stand for positions within PSPL but it seems that the directorships are set up to reflect the aims of the Board and not necessarily that of our members–that is you and me and some 160,000 other members. Our committee do not see that the method by which the directors are elected is in any way democratic.
Clive will explain that almost half of the New Zealand Probus branches have already broken away from PSPL.  In the reports by the PSPL Treasurer and Chairman there is no mention of the Reform Group, nor to the dissatisfaction of the New Zealand Probus branches.
The correspondence from the Reform Group is tabled and will be sent by email to our members.  I will leave Clive to talk about our contacts with the Reform Group and the actions we may take.
Membership Report:  I am sad to report that Juliet H has passed away.  At this meeting we will be inducting Valerie F from Naremburn.  This will maintain our numbers at 60
(36 women and 24 men).
Many happy returns for your October birthday:   Peter M 8, Eleanor S 26, Jenny S 27, and Tony K 30.
PROGRAM OF ACTIVITIES
GUEST SPEAKERS:   Today we welcome Dr. Bruce Horsfield who will tell us about the making of a documentary on the SAS.  Next month, Michael Peters will present Part 2 of his Napoleon and Wellington story.
PROBUS WALKERS:
Tuesday 11th November:  Bronte to Bondi Beach.  This walk will commence at Bronte and follow the coastal path to Bondi Beach.  This year again we have missed the Sculptures by the Sea Exhibits, but we will still enjoy the walk.  The path has a gradient classed as medium with many steps.  Lunch/refreshments will be at the Icebergs Club (photo ID required).  MEET at 9:20 am Liverpool St. Bus stop (just around the corner from the Museum Station, Elizabeth St.) to catch the 378 Bus at 9:35 am bus to Bronte.
OUTINGS:
There is no outing in October, due to the Getaway trip to Armidale.
Tuesday November 25th:  Names and money taken today for this outing, which is a visit to the Medical and Nursing Museum which was part of Prince Henry Hospital at Little Bay.  This will be a really interesting tour of a place which is steeped in history. In 2001 when the hospital was closing down, the then Premier Mr. Carr, decided it would be a good idea to keep part of the hospital’s history alive for future generations to see.  It has been restored to the original 1914 state.  There is a fee for the tour, cost TBA. Lunch will be at the George’s River Sailing Club.  Cost $30.  Bus leaves at 9:30 am. Christmas Lunch Tuesday 16th December:  Names, money and choice of menu taken at this meeting.  The venue is the Cammeray Golf Club, and it will be a great day, not to be missed!  Cost $75 for members and $80 for guests.
Note:  All our Probus meetings are generally held on the third Tuesday of every month.  The next meeting, in November 2014, will be held on Tuesday, the 18th.  The committee meetings are conducted in the NSLC Bistro area, usually on the first Tuesday of the month.  Members are welcome to observe.
