PRESIDENT"S REPORT - May 2015
It is getting colder. My winter doona went on the day before that cold snap! How prophetic was that! Days are getting much shorter, just about 5 weeks before the sun starts to come back and days slowly get longer again! Maurice and Kristina are in Europe experiencing their year long spring/summer–no winters for them!
Maurice however continues to work for our club, from afar on the net, continuing to email those of us online when something comes up to distribute. Clive has done this from Paris, sending the correspondence noted below to Maurice to distribute to us. What stalwart members we have!
We have received correspondence from the Probus South Pacific Limited Reform Group, which our members on email will have received. For others, I have a couple of printed copies at the desk for those who are interested in reading the document. It is an interesting 8-page summary of the circumstances/history of the PSPL and the Reform Group. I would urge that you read it.
I would like to thank Oriel for doing the secretary’s job so effectively while Clive has been on his Gallipoli trip. Clive should be back for this general meeting.
Looking forward to our outing to the Wildwood Gardens at Bilpin this month. It should be lovely, but no doubt cool so we will need to rug up!
Our speaker today is Dr. Sarah Edelman, President of Dying with Dignity, NSW. I have heard Dr. Edelman speak on previous occasions, and have found this an interesting topic.
Membership report: Gwen M and Beth C have become inactive members and Marlene T has resigned due to her schooling schedule. We will be inducting Sally J and Wilhemina K this month. Our membership is now 58 (35 women and 23 men).
Many happy returns of the day for your May birthday: Rob B 09, Jean S 10 and John N 22.
Program of Activities
Guest Speaker: Today we welcome Dr. Sarah Edelman, who will talk to us about
“Dying With Dignity.” Next month, Gabrielle Maston will bring us the latest on “Fad Diets.”
Probus Walkers:
Tuesday 9th June. Rockdale to Brighton via Kyeemagh. We start the walk from Rockdale station making our way through the Plaza (coffee break) and continue through suburban streets passing 8 hectares of Chinese market gardens. We continue under General Holmes Drive into Grand Drive at Brighton-leSands. After walking along the coastal path into Brighton we arrive at the RSL for lunch/refreshments. Walk is classed as easy/medium. One lot of steps. Approx. 5.5 klms. MEET: Town Hall Station Platform 4 at 9:20am for 9:34 am Rockdale train.
Outings:
Tuesday 26th May: Names and money taken today for this outing to
Wildwood Gardens, which were created by Wayne and Sue Tapping over the last 32 years. This will be a lovely outing in crisp autumn weather, and hopefully the garden will still be in full autumn bloom. There is an entry fee of $6 to be paid on the day. We will be having lunch in the Tapping’s cafe, which they are opening on the day to accommodate us. Please check out the menu, at the Outings Desk, and let me know your choice. There is also a Gift Shop to explore. Cost $30. Bus leaves at 9 am.
Tuesday 23rd June: Names and money taken for this outing to the Cochlear Ear Implant Centre at Lane Cove. This will be a really interesting one and one-half hour tour of the centre, highlighting the great work they have achieved over the years by helping so many people who would otherwise remain in a silent world. Lunch will be at the Woolwich Pier Hotel. Cost $30. Bus leaves at 9 am.
Note: All our Probus meetings are generally held on the third Tuesday of every month. The next meeting will be held on June 16th. The committee meetings are conducted in the NSLC Bistro area, usually on the first Tuesday of the month. Members are welcome to observe.
