President’s Report - February 16, 2016

This is my penultimate President’s Newsletter.
Our AGM will be held at next month’s meeting on Tuesday 15th March, and notice is hereby given that all committee positions will be declared vacant.  The positions to be filled are:  President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Secretary, Public Officer, Coordinator of Membership, Speakers, Outings, and Walks Coordinator.
We need to update our Web Site, and there is currently no one on the committee with these skills.  We will be asking our membership today if there is someone who would be able to assist with this matter, or knows of someone who could help.
At our January meeting we foreshadowed a proposed trip to Tasmania.  Today we advise that this proposal is progressing, and the current suggestion for a date for the trip is the latter half of October 2016.
Oriel has worked hard to arrange a lunch for our inactive members, and a date of 1st March, here at the Northbridge Golf Club, has been confirmed.
Douglas has now purchased a projector on our behalf for use as required for our speakers. Today we will hear from Martin Thomas on the interesting and thought-provoking topic of Nuclear Power.
Marie advises that the community bus has been booked for the whole year to November, and has confirmed arrangements for the February visit to the Penrith Printing Museum, and the March visit to the Seven Islands of the Hawkesbury.
Membership report:  Current numbers are 55 (32 women and 23 men).  Jenny S has become an inactive member as she has moved to Lansdowne Gardens.  We hope to be inducting Margaret R today.  Please note a correction to the Membership List: Sally J’s phone number begins with”0451”, not as shown on the list.
Many Happy Returns for your February birthday:   Joan H 04, Gwen M 21, and Brenda O 26.

Note:  All our Probus meetings are generally held on the third Tuesday of every month.  The next meeting will be held on 15th March 2016.  The committee meetings are conducted in the Northbridge Golf Club, usually on the first Tuesday of the month.  Members are welcome to observe.
Program of Activities

Guest Speakers:  Today we welcome Martin Thomas, whose topic is “Nuclear Power.” Next month at our AGM, Clive W will give a talk entitled “A Personal Reflection on World War I.  The Club is now the proud owner of an Epson Data projector and Logitech laser pointer.  The projector is quite a complicated machine and with practice will perform well.  It can show Powerpoint (Windows) and Keynote (Apple) presentations.  It can also show a slide show from a USB stick.  Some simple instructions will be written to enable anyone to operate the system if I am away. The 167-page online manual is far too difficult to understand.  (Douglas I).

Probus Walkers: Tuesday 8th March.  Warriewood Wetlands.  These wetlands are recognized as one of the largest remaining stands of Swamp Forest Complex in Sydney where Heath-leaved Paperbarks and Swamp Mahogany grow.  Also many species of birds inhabit the wetlands including: whip birds, wrens, finches, brush turkeys, kookaburras and green parrots.  The walk is classed as very easy although there are a few bush steps when we visit the waterfall.  Approx. 3.5 kms.  On our return to Warriewood we can catch the bus to Dee Why RSL for lunch.  (Photo ID required.)  MEET:  9:00 am Wynyard bus stand C for the 9:15 am L85 bus to Warriewood.

Probus Outings:
Tuesday 23rd February: Names and money taken today for this outing to the Penrith Museum of Printing in Penrith. We will have a short talk before a demonstration of the operating of the printing presses. The presses and equipment date from the 1860s to the 1970s. This will be a very interesting outing, just to see these large printing presses of yesteryear in action. Cost of entry to the museum is three dollars payable on the day.  Lunch will be at the nearby Paceway Club.  Cost is $30.00.  Bus leaves at 9:00 am.
Tuesday 22nd March:  Names and money taken today for this outing which will be a cruise of the Seven Islands of the Hawkesbury River.  We will catch the 9:22 am train from Hornsby Station to Hawkesbury River Station at Brooklyn.  There is a short walk to the Brooklyn Wharf where we will board our cruise boat for a 3-hour cruise, departing at 10:30 am.  We will see the Seven Islands–Lion, Danger, Spectacle, Long, Peat, Milson and Bar–and we will also get a close-up view of Aboriginal art carvings at Eagle Rock near Brooklyn.  The cruise includes a fantastic fish-n-chips lunch served on board.  Cost for Seniors is $44.00.  We need 20 or more passengers, so please ask friends/relatives to come along for a great day out!

“Fifth Tuesday” Luncheon 29th March: This will be held at the Los Vida restaurant, at 419 Pacific Highway, Crows Nest, 12 Noon.  9439-8323. Contact John N on 9929-6054 for further details.
